Taming the ERP Integration Beast: A Work in Progress
Freedom and integration often conflict with each other, creating chains that hamper you from using those apps the way you want to.

Bad news CIOs: There's still no integration pixie dust. So keep up the hard and important work, says Forrester. CIOs have been talking about enterprise application integration for as long as they've been talking about business-IT alignment or proving the value of the IT function. That is to say, for decades. And, according to a new Forrester Research report, it seems that CIOs have had about as much success solving the former as they have the latter two tasks. In other words: Since there's still no Integration Pixie Dust on the market, there's much more work to be done. The new Forrester report,...

How to get to the top of a LinkedIn Search

"Facebook" and "job hunting" have rarely been synonymous. The social network, largely regarded as a place to connect with friends and family, has had difficulty bridging the gap to the professional world. Crafting a Social Media Policy
Have a policy in place before problems crop up at your company.

This vendor-written tech primer has been edited by Network World to eliminate product promotion, but readers should note it will likely favor the submitter's approach.

Any company with a computer in the office needs to adopt a social media policy. It is just common sense, and, frankly, a smart edict to deploy and follow.
12 tips for safe social networking

The main purpose of implementing a social networking policy is to identify proper usage and behavior for social networking applications. Remember, the overall goal is to protect the rights and privacy of all employees and the integrity and reputation of the company. The CIO should be responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of enterprise-wide information technology policies, standards, and procedures within each department. They should be posted in a place where they are easily visible, like an intranet site, and reiterated on at least an annual basis through awareness training. Before any company delves into social media, it is important to be familiar with...

Eight Phrases Your Boss Doesn't Want to Hear
How to avoid these comments by knowing what to do about them and improving your career options instead...

How to Delegate: IT Managers Learn to Let Go
You may need to let go and learn new skills to manage and delegate well.

Manager moving ideas for groups around in a flow chart.
Hey, tech execs, you can't do it all, so why are you trying? Here's how to offload tasks with confidence, leaving you and your staff happier and more fulfilled. CIO Asif Ahmad believes good managers aren't the ones who can do it all. Rather, the most effective managers are the ones know how to pick which tasks to do themselves and which to hand off to staffers. "Otherwise, the work will never get done," says Ahmad, vice president and CIO at Duke University Health System. Delegating is easier said than done, however, particularly for new IT managers who may be used to being judged on their technical expertise and individual contributions. Everything changes once you get bumped up to management ranks. There, you're judged by...

Faith in Numbers: Six More Tech Cults
How many people do you know in these groups? Are you in one yourself?

These six sects of fanatical loyalists prove there is no end to passion in tech. Call it what you will -- fandom, devotion, obsession -- certain technologies have a way of inspiring an extremely loyal following. So committed are these devotees, you might as well call them technology cults. Sometimes these cults are inspired by elegant lines of code. Other times it's dedication to an ideal. Some are looking to transform the way software is made. Others hope to transform humanity itself. And some just want to argue about it all -- endlessly and at great length. Last year we looked at aficionados of the Apple Newton, the Commodore, Palm, Ubuntu, Lisp, Ruby on Rails, and IBM power systems. This year's batch are...

Microsoft's and Apple's Product Lines Compared: This Is Why Apple Wins
An overview comparing the two companies and how Apple has come out on top.

Photo: Steve Jobs shows off the new ipad
Apple passes Microsoft
Apple catered to consumers, giving you what you want.

Microsoft has, for the first time, been beaten in market cap by Apple. At the close of the market today, Apple sat at $222.12 billion, a gain of 1.8%, while Microsoft went down 1% to $219.18 billion. That makes Apple, according to market cap, the most valuable tech company in the world. Yet compared to Microsoft, Apple has both less cash on hand ($23 billion vs. $35.7 billion) and less revenue ($42.9 billion vs. $58.4 billion). So the fact that the market has valued Apple higher is big news indeed. That Apple has, improbably and at long last, passed Microsoft in market value has everyone...
